Trauma-informed Education Dr. Ferial Pearson
College Advising Corps works to increase the number of low-income, first-generation college, and underrepresented high school students who enter and complete higher education. We do this through two innovative program models. Our in-school model places well-trained, recent college graduates from our 34 partner universities as full-time college advisers in high schools across the nation. As you can see, we are in a unique position to partner with your program to meet shared objectives. We also love to hire your graduates to work in our program full-time. IN this session, you'll receive an overview of the College Advising Corps, hear first-hand how we partner with TRIO/Gear Up programs to accomplish shared goals, and refer your upcoming graduates to high-impact, entry-level full-time positions in education.

Giving Youth a Voice Through Advocacy Selma DeAnda Gallegos
How do you teach youth to advocate for TRIO and GEAR UP Programs? What tools do they need to be successful advocators? In this presentation, I will give a demonstration presentation that pre-college professionals can utilize with their young students. Together, we will go over the importance of advocacy for the TRIO Programs and GEAR UP Programs. Then we will go over how these programs are funded and how to receive the support of the people in Congress. Lastly, this session will include an interactive activity that will serve as a resource guide for TRIO and GEAR UP professionals.

Giving Youth a Voice Through AdvocacyConcurrent Session #5
Location: Southmoreland
Technology is ubiquitous, touching almost every part of our lives, our communities, and our homes. Yet most TRIO programs lag far behind when it comes to integrating technology into our programs. Properly used, technology can help TRIO personnel change the way services are provided and can enhance the relationship between our programs’ staff and students. In this workshop participants will: 1) gain a better understanding of free/low-cost apps that will increase productivity, student engagement, and program visibility; and 2) will learn practical examples of how to implement these technologies into our TRIO programs

Engaging Student Groups (Engaged Learning = Effective Learning) Kolton Lynn (Paradigm Shift)
When students fully engage in content, they remember it longer. Whether virtually or in-person, our team has developed engagement strategies that have raised student engagement levels in programs around the country. Be Comfortable with What We Don't Know While Striving to Engage and Learn Gregory York Roberts
A book review on inclusion. Jennifer Brown has an inclusion model that provides ideas, guidance, and directions when serving on diversity committees and when being an advocate in your variety of roles that you serve at your institutions. This model suggests that we seek to learn how we can improve our knowledge, skills, and competencies to better support our colleagues, the institutions we serve, and the people around us. The stages of the model illustrate how anyone can begin to shift their thinking, gain new perspectives, use their voice, and take meaningful action to create cultures of belonging.
Best Practices of Financial Literacy and Education Cheryl Rauh
In 2008, the Higher Education Act implemented new requirements for financial and economic literacy education and counseling. At that time, the Pell Institute and the University of Southern California conducted an exploratory study of the TRIO financial education landscape, finding few programs aligned with best practices of financial education. This session seeks to update TRIO professionals on current research in financial education and literacy and best practices they can assure are built into their own programs to better support student development of financial skills and knowledge. Core topics will be timing, frequency, and resources for programming.
Supporting Students and Mentees Who Have Impostor Syndrome Dr. Ferial Pearson

How to Conquer Student Apathy & Build Generational Wealth for All TRIO Students Eric Ursich (Academic Tutoring & Test Prep)
Nearly two years of isolation has taught us that apathy has made it much more difficult for our students to achieve their true potential. Because our mission as TRiO professionals is to ensure that our students continue to be successful, it is imperative that we help our students not only socially and emotionally but also through rebuilding and strengthening their core academic foundations. Please join us for a demonstration on how to conquer student apathy while having a lasting & positive impact on your students’ future. From tutoring, to study skills, to executive functioning, to financial literacy, to life coaching, to proven ACT and SAT test-taking strategies - come learn how you can level the playing field and help your students thrive.
Discover how Learning Processes (NOT personality, “strengths,” or interests) effectively impact your students and your program staff. Connect to personalized strategies developed from research AND 25+ years of experience with Learning Processes. Access a web-based tool that identifies, quantifies, and assesses the degree to which students naturally use their Learning Processes. It reveals how students’ self-directed use of their cognition (thought processes), conation (social behaviors), and affection (emotional reactions) interact to affect their academic performance.
Building an Effective Recruitment Calendar for SSS Krystal Rice
In this presentation, participants will learn a step-by-step process for building a recruitment calendar 6-10 months out from on-boarding. Together we'll discuss tips for partnering with your institution and admissions, using machines to handle your light work, and creating a procedure process to maximum department sustainability. Participants will receive a recruitment calendar template to work from on their own.

Facilitating Student Management of Weekly Goals and Empowering Students for Success Margaret Shull
We require the use of weekly goal sheets to increase students’ productivity and their confidence in setting and achieving goals. Initially, these goal sheets are a collaborative effort between the staff and the students with staff reading the goal sheets and communicating weekly with the students. The hope is that after taking the training wheels off, the students will ride into the future having inculcated this tool for their future success.
